This is initial material on our installation, configuration, and use of Microsoft Media Player 10.

This is a placeholder as I gather material.  I have screen shots and images to add here and in allied notes.

I also want to address the confirmation of the download and how the authenticity is established.  Some of this moves over to a discussion on how the certificate authorities are managed on XP.

The initial pages for getting started here are:

• The diary & job jar for further development of this notebook

• The installation history of MP10 that accounts for the versions and configuration dependencies that may arise in comparing experience, resolving incidents, and so  on.

• The Mini Player as the first element to discuss because I want to link to it and the image in my blog.

I am celebrating the installation of this improvement (in that it meets a previously-unsatisfied requirement of mine).  In honor of that, I am going to start an overhaul that I have in mind for supporting software forensics and management of the centrale SOHO configuration.  This is all in anticipation of installing Windows XP Pro and XPSP2 on liberta, Vicki's machine, as my Labor Day Weekend project.

I have crashed MP10 twice so far, and it crashes hard.  Everything freezes and not even task manager can stand up against it.  It is surprising to have to hit the power-off switch to restore operation.  I'm watching to see what the context is (and not keeping too many unsaved documents open for long!).

Apart from that and a basically terrible experience with getting settings right for cookies, scripts, and ActiveX, the experience of operating here under XP is greatly improved in many small ways and some major ones, including the high-quality of the built-in help system (including expansion on what all of the error messages mean).

I also used the download and install of this as an example of verifying signed code.  Found something peculiar about that, but the code was signed and, as the borg king asserts, "this signature is OK."

This will get more technical later.  For now I am just enjoying the experience.
