The first step is to make an ASP page in a laboratory folder and then see what I can do to run JavaScript from places not in visible sections. Then I want to see how to put data in a place on the server. I will obviously try this out on compagno first, and then move it to nfoCentrale when I am sure I have a safe version to demonstrate there. Two steps -- running scripts from somewhere else, and being able to park data somewhere (preferably else, and not dictated by the client in any direct way).
moved 2004-04-01	2004-03-11	I have some benchmarks for the blogging, collaborative writing Wiki, and such now. For one thing, I really, really like how Wikipedia works, and the number of things that have been paid attention to. This has me all stirred up.
	2004-03-11	Uh Oh. I have too many projects in my head. First, I want to re-establish blogging to where I can manage it from my local computer. That is, I want my posts to emanate from my orcmid.com development site so that I don't have synchronization problems and I can maintain everything from compagno/orcmid and always publish to orcmid.com from there. This does leave some problems to be worked on concerning easy publishing and also integration of comments and things like that. I need to break this down somehow. So there are some super-project ideas around collaboration, annotating, blogging, etc. Then there are some plumbing activities around dyamic posting, synchronization, and content/site-management activities. Finally, this all has to tie into the nfoWare ideas about being able to archive and preserve on CD-ROM and even a hard drive, and to be able to access any of those as if using the web site. Then there is the idea of having a side-car to the CD-ROM that is on a hard drive or web site and that allows even read-only material to be annotated, transcluded or whatever.

	2004-02-28	The cross-linking of notes raises some problems. When I split a catalog, the links to fragments of the original catalog page will be broken. And because some parts of catalogs never move, I can't handle it by moving all links. There does not seem to be a way out of this. This is also a case that justifies sweeping (versioning after) rather than versioning first and controlling what is current. This is going to take more work and more explanation. It seems to have some explanatory power around forcing solutions. And also having solutions with too little state, trying to color bits three or more colors, etc. There is a heuristic quality too.
	2004-02-28	I figured out how to link notes and projects to their catalog as well as to ground them. It is in the title box, where the number should be repeated. For example, the title box here links to the catalog, not the section. Put this into practice here and in the notes section. It can work with construction notes and all others.

I am keen on that, but I am reluctant to begin. That's a bigger spiral, yet there needs to be a fluid way to collect contributions and build up to something. It would be nice to have something in place when I start my M.Sc dissertation project in August too.

It is an example of spiraling of a kind, because one thing to MD5 check is the MD5 tool. So, there should be a project sheet for the MD5 checksum, and some steps to the project. Get a starter there. The first item is to gather existing materials and the email discussions. This is going to be a gathering of collaborative material that Bill Anderson and I can claim jointly, perhaps referring to it from any articles we produce. There are going to be holes that need to be filled in. That needs to be spiraled also.
	2004-01-18	I have been talking, in notes, about spiraling a lot. ("Talking in Notes." I must remember that.) It looks like there is actually a project to define what I mean by spiraling, capture spirals, and also make clear what I mean by it. I am thinking in spiral development of *nfoWare* (the site for starters). The key case for spiraling is the chicken-and-egg problem around confirmable experience and coherence. I need a fair amount of material for this to be demonstrated with the site itself and the artifacts provided as *nfoWare*. Spiraling is, in this context, a way to make one "round" of development, knowing full well that it alludes to more than is provided, yet somehow start closing on things. One wrap of the spiral is one layer of expansion and, in an informal sense, completiing/closing. It is not the same as incremental, because rework and replacement may be involved. However, here we will retain residue of all previous spirals so that we have a demonstration of how it was done (and how it wasn't). I really like incremental development and evolutionary development, so we will see how that and a spiral development model fit together. (I might also be misapplying these terms very severely, so I need to check that out to.) Something to define in a project so this can be undertaken and shown in a self-conscious way.
	2004-01-08	I need P000003+ material on project-section structure, project materials, etc. Define this and start with something: The project identification system, the way that pages work here (in terms of other pages that follow the same practices, if appropriate), and I think engineering is a separate section of the site, where we address practices of engineering as opposed to specific projects for nfoWare. Of course, those practices can be applied and demonstrated in the nfoWare site, artifacts and materials themselves.

moved 2004-03-13	2004-01-08	In talking with Bill Anderson about having some collaborative support here, even if only a shared private FTP directory, I realize that I can also treat that as part of the development of software-engineering methodology for nfoWare also. That is, collaborative support enables software engineering practices as well as provisions for people commenting and annotating content and so on.
	2004-01-08	I need to bring over some software-engineering structure from the Gr3 project on web presence. I am unclear how much can be applied here, and exactly what and how to bring over. There might be a tie to data and database engineering, but I mean more in the software engineering right here to produced what is produced here, including web presence. I also need to put in some seams as going-in constraints. The ones for slices of Situating Data will do for starters.
	2004-01-08	There needs to be some definition of terms used on project definitions (such as ad hoc, spiral, incremental, and evolutionary). Whether they appear in a glossary is a different question. They certainly appear in some glossary.
	2004-01-08	Bill Anderson and I were talking about projects (I have other notes in the construction Job Jar). Bill was suggesting the eXtreme Programming practice of starting small and defining very small steps, learning how the steps work, and so on. That's appropriate. Also, it is more to have more existence for what we are committed to do. I give the semblance of that, with job jars and diaries, but it is not focused and it isn't done as part of something that is nailed down in the future. We can practice here.

Can this be done as a project?
