Orcmid's Lair> repaving> 2008-08-29 announcement>

Orcmid's Lair Is Being Repaved.

The Orcmid's Lair site is being repaved to correct problems resulting from movement to a new web server.   At the same time, the site is being adjusted to use the latest styles and formats that are applicable to this and other sites of the nfoCentrale.net family.

Check the Site Repaving Project pages for additional details on the approach to repaving and its tracking.  Contact the technical coordinator with questions and to report any defects that you notice.

2010-04-06 Create a new Live Writer account access for the new blog engine and employ a new hosting-site posting-access account for Live Writer authored submissions.
2010-04-06 Delete the blogger FTP-access account when blogger FTP ends or I have migrated to a new blog engine, whichever happens first.
2010-04-04 index.htm account for the status and emergency response pages for blog content and for the RSS feeds
2007-02-17 I am also getting more interested in the Atom format and how it can be used for micro-content and other goodies.  [dh:2007-02-19 This is important if I want to do content-management using XML fragments and such.   Hold that thought Dennis.]

2004-04-17 Implement "nofollow" in the bottom blocks here and also in the Blog template.  Carry this to the other blogs too.

2004-09-29 Cycle the updates to the Orcmid's Lair template back through the other blogs: Professor von Clueless, Numbering Peano, Spanner Wingnut [dh:2005-04-17 I don't know what this is any more, but I better leave it open.][dh:2004-10-03 This becomes part of the great template unification in any case.]
2004-09-02 Include dependence on the c000010 and c000011 material, and have that material take over the site-wide lock-down pages as well as the ones here.
2004-09-02 Move the Praxis101 screen shots from blog/2004/ to some place where they are useful.
2004-09-02 Celebrate filling in this job jar and archive most of the material for easier maintenance of this page.

2010-04-06
2006-04-23 Split off the completed items before 2006 into an archive page just to simplify maintenance and review. [dh:2010-04-06 This became unnecessary as the result of reorganization of archive pages into their own subfolder and the cessation of Blogger creation of the archive list in a separate page sometime in 2007.]
done
2010-04-06
2006-04-23 Set up a lockdown procedure for older sections and look at moving the old archive pages somewhere.  Or move the new archive pages and worry about what to do with the old ones.  But do something.  This is a lot of clutter and bother.  [dh:2010-04-06 The move removed the clutter problem and isolated the blogger-developed content.  When the FTP service goes away, I will also close the account that I used for that, using a different account for the replacement blogging engine.]
done
2010-04-06
2004-05-11 Build a new lair-chive index page that has the locked-down portion be permanent and for which Blogger only adds the new still-regeneratable archives.  [dh:2010-04-06 Since I am going to retire use of blogger, this never-taken step won't be needed.  I have solved the lair-chive index page problem by using a pull-down archive control on the blog sidebar.  Meanwhile, lair-chive.asp is dong fine.  Blogger stopped using it a while back, and its template is now useless too.   So the problem both went away and is being side-stepped.
done
2010-04-06
2010-04-04 If the now-generated archive-page roll-down links to the archive folder, move the archive materials and see what that breaks.  [dh:2010-04-06 I could not just move the files on the development server while they were shared differently on the hosted-site image in VSS also.  Once I branched moved, and reshared, it all worked great.  The archive pages generally just work and page that catalogs archive links was updated to point to the new locations.  Any breakage will be in absolute URLs that refer (in)to the old locations of the archive pages.  I'm going to chance it, since posts have had their own locations since some time in 2004.
done
2010-04-06
2004-11-25 On roll-over to 2005, freeze the archives, capturing them on the archive page and its template.  Then start a new archive series in the 2005/ folder instead of the top level.  [dh:2010-04-04 This is accomplished by creating an archive/ folder and moving all of the archive there there for continued support by Blogger.  This is now separate from when Blogger is shut off and the Blogger-created material locked down.]
done
2010-04-05
2010-04-04 archive/ establish using Blogger and see what happens with regard to being able to populate archive pages anywhere.  Start with getting blogger to start putting archive pages in the folder.  Then see what happens for the old archive pages (or not). [dh:2010-04-04 and it worked great.  Only the newest archive page was created in the new folder but the archive list pull-down listed them all as if they were there.  This gave me the opening I needed for the next step: moving the archive pages at blog/ to blog/archive/ and seeing if they worked from there.]

done 2010-04-04 index.htm Repave for Construction Structure propagation throughout the blog section.  Provide top level placeholders for links to subordinate material.
done 2007-02-19 Add index pages for the new folders created as part of the last backup: 2006/11, 2006/12, 2007, 2007/01, 2007/02 and anticipate 2007/03.
done 2007-02-17 Figure out why BlogJet can't get through and see what I need to do about that.  Maybe buy a new copy.  I also want to try LiveWriter at some point.  [dh:2007-02-19 I did update to BlogJet 2.0 and it now works properly in IE 7.0 so that's nice.  I also found out that the correct URL for the API to "new Blogger" is http://www2.blogger.com/api and not the old one.]
done 2007-02-17 Replace the template again to use the exact 150 by 91 dimensions of OrcmidsLair-thumb.gif and avoid resampling there too (once I figured out why the latest blog page doesn't look as good as these web pages).
done 2007-02-17 Instead of having the browser resample the OrcmidsLair-logo.gif versions to the 172 by 107 that is displayed, make new versions of the logo.gif file that have exactly those dimensions.
done 2007-02-16 Make duplicate versions of the logo from the same original as the current OrcmidsLair-thumb.gif (as on this page) for reference from old blog pages that have a logo: OrcmidsLair-logo.gif and orcmidslair-logo.gif
done 2007-02-16 Change to "New Blogger" and see that all posts are preserved all right
done 2007-02-16 Make a version of the template that uses the new OrcmidsLair-thumb.gif for the logo on blog pages.
done 2006-04-23 Create folders through 2006-05 and then backup what is new for all recent posts.
done 2006-04-23 Customize the index pages from 2006-02 back through 2005-10 to be correct.
done 2004-10-06 Alter the shading behind the logo block to see if I can make sharper.  Try column color and then try white. [white works, and we raised the links on the right side to the middle of the title bar]
done
2004-10-02
2004-09-29 Add privacy and status links to the template.  [dh:2004-10-02 Posted "Space-Age Meter Reader" to verify the update.]
done 2004-09-29 Post "Hugging the Monorail" to try out the updated template.
done 2004-09-29 Bring the bottom block in from the edges so it isn't quite so startling and lines up with the body more nicely.
done 2004-09-29 Correct the history block on the template to identify the template being what the history is about.
done
2004-09-04
2004-09-02 Prepare the 2004/09 postings folder and prepare to back up the site.
done 2004-09-02 Bring features of the von Clueless template over here to the Orcmid's Lair template.  I'm thinking of the table properties, the recent articles in the sidebar, and the bottom-strip with the construction history and Hard Hat logo.

2004-09-02
2004-08-28 With a default.asp page in operation, I need to look at how the index.htm page works as a default when the default.asp page is momentarily absent (as when doing a lock-down). [dh:2004-08-30 The index.htm is out-of-date and it is referenced by the Hard Hat logo of the current template, so there is something to do about this.  Make it a priority to turn this page into a complete blue flush.]

2004-05-11 Find out how to lock down or remove from Blogger control all pages and weekly archives prior to 2004-05-02.  [dh:2004-05-16 There does not seem to be any way to do that on bCentral.  I can't find a way to do file-level permissions.  I have backed up all of the pages to Compagno.  In addition, Blogger Reloaded does not provide for suspension of any archive.  Note: on the individual post items, starting with 2004-05, I can shut off Blogger updating of those subdirectories whenever I want.][dh:2004-09-02 There is no effective way to split the rights of older ones versus newer ones in the same directory, and they can't be moved because we don't know what external links there might be.

2004-06-27 The Blogger template needs to be backed up, with an accurate backup procedure.  [dh:2004-08-28 This needs to be handled all the way around.  As we start making modifications to templates, the idea will be to bring a template back from Blogger.com, tuck it away with a file extension that FrontPage won't mess with (but that jEdit will handle), then go from there.  I will do that as part of some refreshing here.  See 06-01 below]

2004-08-28 9. Enable blogger.com posting to Orcmid's Lair by setting user permissions at nfoCentrale.
done
2004-08-29
2004-08-28 8. After the standby message has been fed, update the feed to include the "all clear" message and update the site so that the standby message is replaced.
 a. Update the standby master to the next number (#2)
 b. Update the all-clear to the next number (#1)
 c. Post the all-clear to the atom feed.
done
2004-08-29
2004-08-28 7. When the caution message has been there for about 30 minutes, do the slamdown and confirm that it is detected.
done
2004-08-29
2004-08-28 6. When we're ready to test the slamdown within an hour of the message, insert the "caution" message into the feed and make corrections needed until it takes.
done
2004-08-29
2004-08-28 5.5 Start by confirming that the "all clear" 0 message works, and put out a surprise all-clear feed.  This way, we know the ending process works (it just happens that there was no preceding caution message, but now we can always make an all-clear).
done
2004-08-29
2004-08-28 5. Create a source for the "all clear" message that can be used in the lair-atom feed.
done
2004-08-29
2004-08-28 4. Create a source for the "caution" message that can be used in the lair-atom feed.
done
2004-08-29
2004-08-28 3. Create a lair-atom.standby.xml message that can be used to indicate when an incident has been detected and we are in early incident-response state.
done
2004-08-29
2004-08-28 2. Test standby, quarantine, and firedrill slamdown and confirm.  Leave the firedrill announcement there.  It will be removed by successful posting of a new default page from Blogger.
done
2004-08-29
2004-08-28 1.3 Make C000011 as holder for the feed testing and slamdown materials
done
2004-08-29
2004-08-28 Tell Blogger.com to use default.asp page from now on too, with blog URL that goes to the directory.  This means the first new posting after we unlock the site will appear on the default page and obliterate any test message, lock-down notice, etc.  Dandy.
done 2004-08-28 1.1 Make C000010 as holder for the blog and site slamdown templates.
done 2004-08-28 1. Make default.firedrill.asp, default.quarantine.asp, and default.standby.asp pages for Orcmid's Lair.
done 2004-08-28 After the clonings are complete, borrow the check-list from miser/astraendo for turning on Numbering Peano and customize it for operation here. [dh:2004-08-28 See 15 to 1 above.]
done 2004-08-28 Then clone C000010 and C000011 from the construction section of The Miser Project and customize them in the orcmid/construction section here.  C000010 applies to any pages here, and C000011 applies to orcmid/blog.
 1. Share C00010-C00011 files from miser/construction to orcmid/construction.
 2. Then branch the top levels but not the images.  C000010C1.gif through C000010C4.jpg can stay shared in VSS.
 3. Then share all of the C0010-C0011 files from miser/construction on compagno to the image of miser/construction for bCentral.
 4. Do a FrontPage Recalculate Hyperlinks in the Compagno development site and work through the checklist to make everything ship-shape (above) to make everything ship-shape.
done 2004-08-28 Create default.asp for the Orcmid's Lair Blog.  Do the usual way - push-pull, click-click, branching lair.asp to default.asp.  Then set lair.asp to redirect to the directory itself:
 1. Branch compagno orcmid/blog/lair.asp in VSS.
 2. Rename compagno orcmid/blog/lair.asp to default.asp in FrontPage.
 3. Share bCentral orcmid/blog/lair.asp back to compagno orcmid/blog/ in VSS.
 4. Edit that compagno orcmid/blog/lair.asp to do a redirect to the root of the blog folder.
 5. See how it works.

2004-05-16 Correct the Blog job jar to use left justification in the descriptions [dh:2004-08-28 I can't figure out what page is being referred to.  This one does not have that problem.  Oh, it is the part of B021001 that I moved, maybe? Yup.]
done 2004-07-15 Add a lock-down message to the atom feed in the same manner done for the others while the FTP-update troubleshooting problem is being researched.
done 2004-06-27 On the compagno/orcmid development site, delete the B000000 and B000001 tombstone pages here.  They are in VSS and can be re-shared from the published-site image if needed.  Removing them here eliminates a distraction and may have me think they need to be maintained here instead of over in BlunderDome.

2004-06-01 Elevate the propagation of new headings to /construction and from there to the other sections of Orcmid's Liar and ultimately all of nfoCentrale.  At some point, we may meet CSS in all of this too.  Maybe in nfoWare when we learn to programmatically manipulate and transform material of the blog.  That would be the cool way to do it..
done 2004-06-01 The heading style that is more like <h2> than <h1> in the big parts is less jarring.  Change it here.
done 2004-05-16 Introduce a blogger catalog and job jar, and see how to handle the difference between the blog and the blogWare.
done 2004-05-11 Confirm that no comments have been recorded and synchronize the hosted site to Compagno

done 2004-05-11 Share all new files and republish to the nfoCentrale/orcmid/blog site image on Compagno
done 2004-05-11 Add minimal construction structure to the 2004 and 2004/05 subfolders that now hold content.
done 2004-05-11 Backup the new template and archive templates that I developed as part of adjustment to the revised Blogger organization.  Put the checked-in templates with updated construction history back into Blogger too.

done 2004-05-11 Repair the title blocks of the construction-zone pages here to have a smaller font, without italic, on the top line
done 2004-04-17 Backup this blog, creating the necessary monthly sections.  Then update the status page.  Go on to create updates for the other sections.  Be sure to go get Numbering Peano also.

done 2004-04-11 Change the Orcmid's Lair default page link to the blog to drop cloaking

0.01 2010-04-04 Manage Repaving, Blog Unification, and Blogger Freedom
Repaving is begun so that additional activities can be managed here also.  The Orcmid's Lair blog is the basis for unification of all blog structures and templates.  Ultimately, the structures will be rolled-into a different hosting-site blogging engine, eliminating Blogger as an intermediary.

I just noticed that I have a mess here and that I need to create some structure for tidying up, especially since I continue to make the blog itself quite public.
